NEPAL: KATHMANDU VALLEY AND ANNAPURNA
In April 2015 I was in Nepal when the massive quake caused thousands of deaths and damage in many parts of the country. I started my trip to Bhaktapur near Kathmandu and the the Biskit Jatra Festival where hundreds of thousands watched the incredible scenes of the tug of war over a huge chariot which continued for days and the erection of tall phallic Yasin Poles. Two weeks later a massive earthquake devastated the Kathmandu Valley and other areas reducing many of the great sights here to rubble. I was in the remote Kali Gandaki Valley the deepest in the world, which shook for over 2 minutes. Damage here was slight but with no communication we did not know for 2 days the extent of the damage.
Many of the great temple sights were in ruins and parts of this historic city were severely damaged. The historic city of Bhaktapur was badly affected with much of the atmospheric parts of the old city lay in ruins.
These Photos were taken in 2014 well befor the disaster.
Thankfully much of Nepal remains untouched by the quake so it is still worth visiting.
